Data Entry - Entries

After all the finals have been entered, TkScore can compile a list of the entries that appeared in the finals. The next step is to fill in the names and breeds of those entries.

Using the Entry Names Form

When you click on the Entries button on the main window, the Entry Names form will appear. At the top of the form is a scrollable listbox containing the list of entries for the catalog. Below that listbox are three input fields, labeled "Entry", "Name" and "Breed":

The cursor will start in the "Entry" field. While the cursor is in this field, you can use the Up and Down arrow keys to move up and down the list of entries. You can also type an entry number into this field and that will become the currently selected entry. (It has to be an entry number that appeared in the finals; you cannot add a new number this way). You can also change the currently-selected entry by clicking on the name or number in the entries listbox. When you hit the Enter key, the cursor will move to the "Name" field.

While your cursor is in the "Name" field, you can type the name of the cat. As you type, the listbox below the input fields will show names that match what you have typed. You can use this name search feature to save typing like this:

When the Name input field has been filled in, hit the Enter key. The cursor will move to the Breed input field.

If you used the name search feature to fill in the name, the breed will have been filled in automatically. Otherwise, you should type the breed abbreviation. When you hit the Enter key, the selected entry will advance to the next entry and the cursor will move back to the Entry field.

When all the names and breeds have been filled in, be sure to click on the OK button. The Reset button will undo all changes that you have made to the entry list since you opened the form. The Cancel button will discard all changes that you have made to the entry list since you opened the form and will close the window.

Save Your Work

Save your work by using the File->Save command on the main window menubar after you have hit the OK button on the Entry Names form.

The names.txt File

The name search feature depends on having an up-to-date data base of names and breeds. By default, TkScore will look for a file named 'names.txt' in the '\My Download Files' folder on your hard drive and will read it if it exists.

The first time you use TkScore, and from time to time, you will need to download a new 'names.txt' file from the Web. This file is generated from the names recorded by the Executive office and is updated about once a month. The URL is

http://ticamembers.org/showrep/names.txt

The most convenient place to save the file is in '\My Download Files' on your hard drive (probably drive C:).

If you want to load a new 'names.txt' file in TkScore while the program is running, or tell it to read one from a different location, click on the Load Names button at the bottom of the "Entry Names" form and use the file finder to select the file to read. TkScore will remember the folder where you keep the file and will automatically read it from the same place the next time you use the program.

If you don't want to use the name search feature, just turn off the Name Search checkbutton.
